- Volunteer Squad
Seasoned soldiers of the Red Guard auxiliary force have been taught since their enlistment to not fear death and do anything for the protection of the Middle Kingdom. These soldiers, in order to inspire other Guards to do what is necessary, voluntarily join together in large groups that assault enemy positions head-on and show that now, China goes on the offensive. It has proven effective time and time again in convincing less-experienced Red Guards to brave their own lives and defend China from hostile aggressors with whatever it takes, and while casualties are high, the victories are even higher.
The regular People's Liberation Army view them as nothing but cannon fodder, and has taken to call them "volunteer squads", as they "volunteer for death".
The Chinese Volunteer Squad is China's own Angry Mob, in a sense that they are produced in a group of 10 people, and operate as a single entity. The squad is armed with sub-machine guns and rocket launchers in a ratio of roughly 8:2, making it more or less equipped to deal with any ground threat, be it infantry, vehicles or structures.
A useful phenomena, owing to the Horde Bonus system and the nature of the unit, is that it is almost permanently under the influence of the said bonus, which makes it even more effective from the get go; its numbers, availability and compact size also allow to reinforce the Horde Bonus through-out your ranks, in case you start suffering vehicular losses.
The unit's combat performance, judging by its price and lore, is not very spectacular. The outdated weaponry means that, while they are capable of dealing damage, they are reliant on their sheer number to overpower the enemy, rather than the individual firepower of each constituent soldier, which is made easier with their price and build time, allowing one to amass a large contingent of these Volunteer Squads.
But nevertheless, being infantry still, they are vulnerable to the mundane banes of a footman, ranging from snipers to toxins and flames; but with the added horde nature of the unit, artillery becomes an even bigger threat than usual. If a blob of Volunteers is met by a single Buratino or Grad, the outcome may be quite grisly. An encounter with aircraft may result in much the same way, as they have no means of anti-air defense. Another downside is that, unlike GLA's Angry Mob, they are incapable of replenishing their numbers over time, which means that if it lost 80% of its manpower, it lost 80% of its manpower -- and that's that.
- A yet another downside is the inherent flaw of the SAGE engine in regards to Mob AI. If a large blob is selected to engage a high-hitpoint target, such as force firing on a Supply Dock, or relocating the said blob, the soldiers may get stuck in one another and start to spontaneously die as their comrades move to the selected position.
